On the R models with 2.0 TFSI EA113 engines (K04 turbo), the original air box is designed primarily for quietness and filtration, at the expense of airflow. As soon as power is increased, it becomes a real bottleneck. The RacingLine direct intake kit replaces the entire original assembly with a high-performance cold air system, developed and validated on Volkswagen Racing race cars.
How this direct intake works
The principle is simple: draw in cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay, then route it to the turbo by the most direct and smooth path possible. As a result, airflow increases by up to 9% to feed the high-power K04 turbo. Cool air is richer in oxygen: at equal boost pressure, the engine produces more torque and the turbo responds faster to throttle input. It is one of the first modifications to make on a 2.0 TFSI tune, alone or alongside an ECU remap.
Technical features
- Fully enclosed anodized aluminum airbox in Midnight Black, which isolates the filter from engine heat
- Triple-layer conical filter Trifoam with a very large filtering surface, open-cell polyurethane foam, hand-made in the United Kingdom
- Reinforced silicone turbo hose with internal lip shaped for a turbulence-free air transition, stainless steel clamps included
- Bolt-on direct fitment, compatible with Stage 1 and higher remaps
Frequently asked questions
What real power gain can be expected?
On its own, a direct intake provides a modest but real gain (often a few hp and above all better throttle response). Its main benefit is removing the original air restriction to let the engine breathe: the true gain shows once combined with an ECU remap, where the stock intake restricts the air inlet.
Does the engine sound change much?
Yes, the intake note becomes richer and more pronounced during acceleration and on overrun, while remaining contained by the closed airbox. This is not a shrill open-air filter: the sound stays balanced and tasteful.
Does the filter need maintenance?
Yes. The Trifoam filter should be cleaned and re-oiled approximately every 16,000 km using the dedicated RacingLine oil and cleaner kit. A dirty or poorly oiled filter loses performance and filtration efficiency.
Compatibility
- VW Golf 6 R 2.0 TFSI (K04)
- VW Scirocco R 2.0 TFSI (K04)
- VW Golf 5 GTI Edition 30 and Pirelli (K04)
A pleated cotton filter version, maintenance-free, is available under reference VWR12G60RC. The replacement foam filter corresponds to reference VWR12G60RFO.
For further upgrades
Pair this intake with a RacingLine ECU remap, a turbo induction hose and, depending on the engine, an additional intercooler to fully use the extra airflow.
