On the 1.8 TSI engines of the Polo GTI, the original airbox is designed primarily for noise reduction and filtration, at the expense of airflow. Once power is increased, it becomes a real bottleneck. The RacingLine direct intake kit replaces the entire original assembly with a high-performance cold air system, developed and validated on Volkswagen Racing race cars.
How this direct intake works
The principle is simple: draw cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay, then route it to the turbo by the most direct and smooth path possible. As a result, airflow increases by up to 9%, with an approx. 14 hp gain measured on dyno on a stock car. Cool air is richer in oxygen: at equal boost pressure, the engine produces more torque and the turbo responds faster to acceleration. It is one of the first modifications to make on a 1.8 TSI performance build, either on its own or combined with an ECU remap.
Technical specifications
- Fully enclosed anodized aluminum intake box in Midnight Black, which isolates the filter from engine heat
- Triple-layer conical filter Trifoam with a very large filter surface area, open-cell polyurethane foam, hand-made in the UK
- Internally lipped silicone turbo hose designed for a turbulence-free air transition, stainless steel clamps included
- Direct bolt-on fitment, compatible with Stage 1 and higher ECU remaps
Frequently asked questions
What real power gain can be expected?
On its own, a direct intake provides a modest but real gain (often a few hp and, above all, improved throttle response). Its main benefit is removing the original air restriction to let the engine breathe. The real gain shows once it is combined with an ECU remap, where the original intake restricts the air supply.
Does the engine sound change much?
Yes, the intake sound is richer and more present under acceleration and on lift-off, while remaining contained by the enclosed box. This is not a loud open-air filter: the sound stays balanced and tasteful.
Does the filter need maintenance?
Yes. The Trifoam filter should be cleaned and re-oiled about every 16,000 km with the dedicated RacingLine oil and cleaner kit. A dirty or poorly oiled filter loses performance and filtration efficiency.
Can this kit be kept with an IS20 or IS38 turbo?
Yes: for these turbo upgrades, RacingLine offers the VWR12P1GTIS38 intake upgrade kit (90° turbo elbow and hose), which replaces the supplied hose and supports the increased airflow.
Compatibility
- VW Polo GTI 1.8 TSI (6C, 2017-2018)
- SEAT Ibiza Cupra 1.8 TSI (6J, 2017-2018)
A pleated cotton filter version, maintenance-free, is available under reference VWR12P1GTC.
Going further
Combine this intake with a RacingLine ECU remap, a turbo induction hose and, depending on the engine, an additional intercooler to fully use the extra airflow.
