The intercooler cools the air compressed by the turbo before it enters the engine. Cooler air is denser: more oxygen molecules per liter, more potential power. The original intercooler, sized for stock performance, quickly becomes heat-saturated under sustained spirited driving: this "heat soak" phenomenon results in a gradual drop in power over the course of the session.
