On the 2.0 TDI engines of the A5 platform, the original air box is designed first and foremost for quiet operation and filtration, at the expense of airflow. As soon as you increase power, it becomes a real bottleneck. The RacingLine direct intake kit replaces the entire original assembly with a high-performance cold air system, developed and validated on Volkswagen Racing race cars.
How this direct intake works
The principle is simple: draw cooler, denser air from outside the engine bay, then route it to the turbo by the most direct and smoothest path possible. As a result, airflow rises by up to 9% over the original intake and the turbo's boost build-up time is reduced by up to 500 rpm. Cooler air is richer in oxygen: at the same boost pressure, the engine produces more torque, and the turbo responds more quickly to acceleration. It is one of the first modifications to make on a TDI tune, either on its own or alongside a remap.
Technical specifications
- Fully closed anodized aluminum airbox in Midnight Black, which isolates the filter from engine heat
- Triple-layer conical filter Trifoam with a very large filter surface, made of open-cell polyurethane foam, handmade in the United Kingdom
- Silicone turbo hose with an internal formed lip for turbulence-free air transition, stainless steel clamps included
- Direct bolt-on fitment, compatible with Stage 1 and higher remaps
Frequently asked questions
What real power gain can be expected?
On its own, a direct intake provides a modest but real gain (often a few horsepower and, above all, better throttle response). Its main benefit is removing the original air restriction to let the engine breathe: the real gain shows once combined with a remap, or where the original intake restricts the air inlet.
Does the engine sound change much?
Yes, the intake sound becomes richer and more pronounced under acceleration and on lift-off, while remaining contained by the closed airbox. This is not a loud open-air filter: the sound stays balanced and tasteful.
Does the filter need maintenance?
Yes. The Trifoam filter should be cleaned and re-oiled about every 16,000 km with the dedicated RacingLine oil and cleaner kit. A dirty or poorly oiled filter loses performance and filtration efficiency.
Is it compatible with the Audi A3 8P and Leon II?
Yes, but these two models require the dedicated front adapter to properly route cold air. The Golf 5 fits without an adapter.
Compatibility
- VW Golf 5 2.0 TDI (2008-2014)
- Audi A3 8P 2.0 TDI (2003-2012) - with the dedicated adapter
- SEAT Leon II 1P 2.0 TDI (2005-2012) - with the dedicated adapter
A pleated cotton filter version, maintenance-free, is available under part number VWR12G50DC. The replacement foam filter is part number VWR12G60RFO.
Going further
Pair this intake with a RacingLine remap, a turbo induction hose and, depending on the engine, an additional intercooler to fully use the extra airflow.
