Exhaust systems and roadworthiness inspection in France
What the vehicle inspection checks
During the inspection, the exhaust is checked on several points: mounting and sealing, presence of the emissions control components, compliance of the installed system and, depending on the case, noise level. A non-compliant system or a missing emissions control part can cause the vehicle to fail inspection.
ECE homologation
An ECE-homologated system has been approved for noise and compliance. It carries a homologation marking, which is what allows it to be fitted to a road vehicle without any issue. A non-homologated system is reserved for motorsport use, even if it is of high quality.
What passes
- A homologated system, with its marking, correctly installed and leak-free.
- A system that retains the original catalytic converter and particulate filter.
- A vehicle whose noise level stays within regulatory limits.
What fails
- A decat pipe: removing the catalytic converter is not compliant on a vehicle driven on public roads.
- A removed or gutted DPF: this is prohibited on public roads and treated as a defect.
- A non-homologated system or one whose noise level exceeds the limit.
- A system that leaks or is poorly secured.
How to choose your exhaust system
If the car is driven on the road, start with a part number listed as homologated. For models equipped with a particulate filter, check that the system retains it. Inspection rules change over time: if in doubt, the inspection center has the final say.

Legal notice: removing or modifying the catalytic converter, particulate filter or sensors of a road vehicle is prohibited. Non-homologated parts are reserved for motorsport use, on closed circuits or off public roads.
